Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics
The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.
The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
