The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict management of the region
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population desire the war to end in return for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, area and zone areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, medical staff said.
