19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev won his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a former world number one, has had a torrid period, winning just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in especial - led to him falling of the top ten and ultimately parting ways with long-time trainer Cervara.

Currently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the past month - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over opponent Moutet.

It is his maiden championship following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hard court after March of the previous year.

The win also means Medvedev has won twenty-one championships at 21 distinct events.

"It's the first time I'm at a competition with my children at once, so to secure a title is particularly special," stated world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my child my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, comprising in that event previously this season.

His counter-punching play style and frequent emotional displays on court had prompted commentators to wonder if his skill to compete at the highest level was concluded.

However the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform aggressively, supported by an improved serve.

The champion recovered from a deficit in the first set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the concluding five games to take the lead.

The competitors swapped break points in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial tour championship, seized the initiative to create a third set.

He defended four early-game break points in a close final set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to handle a shot after a lengthy match.
