Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
