New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
