Meteorologists are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Readings Expected to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
