Following a delay and a particularly heated meeting, a national immunization advisory committee was scheduled to decide on Friday concerning altering the long-held guideline that all newborns be immunized against hepatitis B.

Heated Debate and a Delayed Ballot

The opening session of the meeting on Thursday was characterized by fiery discussion over limiting availability to the hepatitis B vaccine for infants and a resolution to defer the vote by a day to give members more time to examine the language. The committee, which advises the CDC on vaccine use, had put off the vote twice in the past.

“Is there any definitive data of damage of giving this shot before 30 days? Or is this conjecture?” inquired one adviser.

In answer, another participant stated, “There is inadequate data about the enduring danger.”

The injection is presently advised for each baby within 24 hours of delivery to stop transmission of hepatitis B, which can cause significant hepatic injury. It has been administered to 1.4 billion people for more than three decades.
