Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
