Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline featuring angels, demons, and malevolent powers growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of heroes who will separate from the primary party to undertake their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the campaign’s events—used the foes for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could assist the group enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor vowed a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which players will be where in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
