Crew Member Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
