Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his team can keep managing with player absences after revealing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined since August after undergoing knee surgery. Initially expected to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when stepping up his recovery and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This development creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Additional concerns surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has resulted in a much stronger position to deal with such setbacks.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

Questioned if more options was helping their championship push, his response was positive. “Yes, because this season has seen more issues in certain positions, and now the problems with the backline,” he continued.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we want to compete at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”

Arteta expressed his eagerness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I see him suffer while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return involved on the pitch because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
