A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
